A men beside the window…

April 13th, 2006 by watiezakaria

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man  was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour a day to drain the fluids from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and   families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military  service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the  man in the bed next to the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed would live for those one-hour periods where  his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and  color of the outside world. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake, the man had said. Ducks and swans played on the water while  children sailed their model boats. Lovers walked arm in arm amid flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite  detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by.  Although the other man could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive  words. Unexpectedly, an alien thought entered his head: Why should hehave all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never get to see  anything? It didn’t seem fair. As the thought fermented, the man felt  ashamed at first. But as the days passed and he missed seeing more sights, his envy eroded into resentment and soon turned him sour. He   began to brood and found himself unable to sleep. He should be by that  window - and that thought now controlled his life.

Late one night, as he lay staring at the ceiling, the man by the window  began to cough. He was choking on the fluid in his lungs. The other man   watched in the dimly lit room as the struggling man by the window groped for the button to call for help. Listening from across the room, he never moved, never pushed his own button which would have brought the nurse running. In less than five minutes, the coughing and choking  stopped, along with the sound of breathing. Now, there was only silence–deathly silence.

The following morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths. When she found the lifeless body of the man by the window, she was saddened and called the hospital attendant to take it away–no  words, no fuss. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the man asked if he  could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his   first look. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it all himself. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall.

Moral of the story:

The pursuit of happiness is a matter of choice…it is a positive attitude we consciously choose to express. It is not a gift that gets delivered to our doorstep each morning, nor does it come through the window. And I am certain that our circumstances are just a small part of what makes us joyful. If we wait for them to get just right, we will never find lasting joy.

The pursuit of happiness is an inward journey. Our minds are like   programs, awaiting the code that will determine behaviors; like bank vaults awaiting our deposits. If we regularly deposit positive, encouraging, and uplifting thoughts, if we continue to bite our lips  just before we begin to grumble and complain, if we shoot down that seemingly harmless negative thought as it germinates, we will find that there is much to rejoice about.

Butterfly

April 12th, 2006 by watiezakaria

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon.

The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time.

Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.

What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were God’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If God allowed us to go through our lives without any obstacles, it would cripple us.

We would not be as strong as what we could have been. We could never fly!

I asked for Strength………
And God gave me Difficulties to make me strong.

I asked for Wisdom………
And God gave me Problems to solve.

I asked for Prosperity………
And God gave me Brain and Brawn to work.

I asked for Courage………
And God gave me Danger to overcome.

I asked for Love………
And God gave me Troubled people to help.

I asked for Favors………
And God gave me Opportunities.

I received nothing I wanted ……..
I received everything I needed!

Maulidur Rasul

April 12th, 2006 by watiezakaria

"Things have been said, it been said for nothing, things that have been done, it done purposely for nothing, things that meant, it meant only for togetherness and not to the hard way…"

I wondered should I go or should I stay,
the band had only one more song to play.
And then I saw you out the corner of my eye,
a little girl, alone and so shy.
I had the last waltz with you,
two lonely people together.
I fell in love with you,
the last waltz should last forever.
But the love we had was going strong,
through the good and bad we get along.
And then the flame of love died in your eye,
my heart was broke in two when you said goodbye.
I had the last waltz with you…
It’s all over now, nothing left to say,
just my tears and the orchestra playing.
La la la la la la la la la,
la la la la la la la la la.
I had the last waltz with you…
La la la la la la la la la.

Hidden resentments poison a relationship; so if something bothers you, say it. Remember that while men are wary of emotional conversations, they love to find solutions. Express your problem and then ask him to help you find the answer.

Geek Lifestyle?

April 4th, 2006 by watiezakaria

I am a currently practicing board-certified Internal Medicine physician in a large rapidly expanding tech-growth community. (Ed note: Verified) Our area is rapidly being filled with web development, IT, and biotechnology companies. As a doctor in this area over the last few years, I have discovered some unique health problems associated with this population. One of my patients pointed me to this site when I was discussing with her if computer use causes carpal tunnel syndrome.

I have noticed several repeating patterns in this geek lifestyle population.

I have always wanted to post my observations regarding the geek lifestyle. I affectionately call it the “geek lifestyle” because of my previous life of programming and web design. One of the best part of my job is getting to live vicariously through these young energetic people. I frequently wonder what would have happened to me if I would have stayed with my tech-life instead of transitioning to medicine.

Personal points aside, I have noticed several repeating patterns in this geek lifestyle population. Hopefully, these ideas will spark others to study this unique population.

#1 Horrible Sleep Hygiene
Insomnia and altered sleep patterns is one of the most common complaints to my office. Frequently the complaint is of light sleep or of multiple awakening throughout the night. Although this can be a symptom of depression, this is typically caused by poor sleep habits. It typically starts with somebody waking up in the middle of the night and turning on the laptop or TV. This begins to happen more and more frequently until the patient starts to worry about waking up as soon as they go to bed at night. This stress makes the sleep worse and worse until they finally come to see me.

If one is awake in bed for more than 10-15 minutes, one should get up and do something non-stimulating. Listening to music or reading are excellent choices. Lying in bed and watching TV or using the laptop are the worst. These stimulate the brain to wake up even more. If this happens repeatedly, the habit will be formed.

A few of my patients have tried “sleep hacking” and it almost always fails. The dangers of hacking sleep have been explored by a physician elsewhere.

#2 Headaches

Poor screen position, too small font, screen too bright/too dark, poor sitting posture are all commonly reported causes of chronic headache.

Recurrent headaches are a very frequent complaint among heavy computer users. Typically these are caused by a multitude of issues regarding computer use. If they occur the same time every day or if they do not appear on non-work days, these are the clues that point me to a computer cause.

Often when I tell my patients that I suspect it is their work environment, they come back and tell me me how they fixed it. Poor screen position, too small font, screen too bright/too dark, poor sitting posture are all commonly reported causes of chronic headache. When in doubt, I just tell them to trade offices for a couple of days. If they feel better in the other office, then it suggests that it is related to their personal work environment.

Poor eyesight is frequently believed to be a cause of chronic headaches although I believe that is very overrated. What I have seen a few times is that people with glasses having too strong of a prescription. Type-A people when getting refracted for glasses will mistakenly report that higher and higher powers make them see better. To check for this when you get your glasses, just ask your doctor if the manual refraction is close to the computer-predicted, automated refraction. If the manual is a lot higher, then over-power should be a consideration.

#3 Back Pain
Back pain is a frequent complaint in my office as well. In the general patient population, chronic back pain is often a sign of depression; however, in the geek this is more frequently due to work conditions or to overuse. Poor posture, incorrectly sized chair, or poorly positioned monitors are common culprits.

The weekend warrior syndrome often causes the overuse back injury here. All week long the back becomes weak from sitting at the computer desk all day. On the weekend, yard work or lifting causes strain on these underdeveloped muscle units.

#4 Poor Attention Span
I am always amazed at the number of people that mention to me that their attention span is poor. Frequently they will wonder if they have ADD. Sometimes they will even complain about the inability to stay awake during long meetings or stay focuses on non-computer tasks.

The typical geek trains their brain to be heavily focused while multitasking day after day. Is it surprising that this same brain does not do well when forced to isolate down to one task?

First, if one has poor sleep for any reason, the attention span and ability to stay awake during the day will be severely impacted. Attention span cannot be fixed unless the sleep pattern is healthy.

I believe that “poor attention span” has unique aspects in the geek population because I believe many people become geeks because computers have always been one of the things that keep them stimulated. In fact, if I question someone about their attention span, they never, even have problems staying focused on their computer work. If someone is in the middle of some exciting programming, the focus is always there. Therefore, it is not just a generic “attention” problem.

I believe this relative perception of poor attention span is actually caused by two factors. The first is genetic. The brains of some people are just programmed to multi-task. These people likely excel in a computer-rich environment for this reason. I believe the second factor is a simple training issue. Let me explain with an analogy.

If I were to go and try to run a few miles this weekend, I would not be able to easily do so. My muscles are just out of shape from my lack of exercise over the last few months. However, if you take one of the these college basketball athletes, any of them would be able to run miles without even breathing heavy. However, if you made them sit down and try to learn Java for 12 hours a day, most of them would be asleep at their desk before lunch.

The typical geek trains their brain to be heavily focused while multitasking day after day. Is it surprising that this same brain does not do well when forced to isolate down to one task? Listening in a meeting is a very isolated, very passive event. Coding, developing, debugging — these are not passive at all. The geek brain is just not trained to sit quietly and listen.

Thank you to the editors of this site for allowing me to share my observations. I’ll be glad to answer questions in the comments below.

01-04-06 :- HELLO BLOG… :-D

Hmm quite a time i haven’t update my writings.. haven’t got a chance.. No diap up, no WIFI, no streamyx at home, no more.. guess why? someone in my house spend about 400++ from January to March making calls for that stupid TV bids/games… darn it..

January has passed by, then February.. March and now April.. lovely!.. April is Fool is it..hehe April FOOL! In the last few years.. April FOOL was my favourite date.. 1st April 2000 my sis wedding.. hehe but for my sister it was her unforgettable date but for me is the ‘prank day’.. but not so la.. the memorables that i could not even count… :-).. March has been a terrible month for me.. not blaming the month.. but just blaming myself in other words.. :-( But always.. a new fresh day will come.. thats what i waited so far.. im just counting the days, the months and the years.. a very truly happy moments that i have to go through.. cross-finger :-) .. pray for the goodness in life, the betterness and the happiness.. dedicated to my family, friends, and ’spesel one’ as well..

My life for 25 years and 3 months.. so great! awful! hehe.. "..You are curious and a true follower. You can please someone so much that it seem like you are trying to charm that person. You hide your disagreement under your smiling face. This is a charming quality of yours.." when im under disagreement.. i cannot keep my smile, excuse me this fortune teller..! i will cry out loud instead… try me! ;-) Im not a person who wants to argue all the time, but i believe in my own stand, and actually this is one way of checking whether people giving me much attention or not.. :-) look at the positive way la.. an optimist thinker… try to be one.. just look at the bright side the right side and the descent side way of life.. im 25. opps 26 is it? try to be one.. again.. still trying and learning.. no harm friends! (*_^) still lot more to improve and change.. the later the better .. ^(*_*)^

Next week will be in Perak for two three days.. So hopefully the presentation went well.. pray to God. Hope everything will be in our side.  As much people concerned and as much people worked for it.. may GOD blessed! 1st April.. My 2nd year anniversary in my workplace.. 2 years? what… feel like im still under probation.. am i being a good girl along this year.. about to find out.. one step in SKALI.. 1st April 2004.. tough decision to make.. in between.. i just lost the way.. goodbye exxonmobil and goodbye xybase.. the first two opportunity that i missed.. if i could reverse my way.. i should have listen to my parents advice. But i believed in fate.. and here it comes. Along the way, i just want to be the best, but yet.. im still on my way thanks ABA fo the thought. suddenly remind of him hmm.. The first move we step in, it is only the beginning..and hmm the begining of the ending hehe.. opps.. as a fresh graduate.. just make the right choice and just pray to GOD that the willingness, the goodness is with us..

As i sat in the LRT couple days ago..there was a girl sit next to me reading this small book, and i just wondered, because her mouth mumbling.. and when i looked, she was reading this mathurat, hmm did i spell it right? This is about the doa book, in short la. And as i was looking, i saw this ayat, in BM translation, and hope you guys mind to share.. it was like this:-

"Allahuma, Kau lindungilah aku dari rasa sedih dan gelisah, Kau lindungilah aku juga dari rasa pengecut dan bakhil.. dan Ya Allah, Kau lindungi aku dari cengkaman hutang dan penindasan orang.."

This was the sentence that i managed to capture during that time and it successfully captures my heart.. As a normal person, the sadness, fear, reverence are all over.. and all this while i got some of these feeling and it hurts me, annoys me and sometimes blocking my way ahead. So at least, this ayat somehow can heal my heart through this thing plus the penindasan orang.. We never knew. These are the main key points that just captured my heart, rasa sedih dan gelisah dan penindasan orang.. Thats terribly hurts. As time goes by, as we grew older, there are lots of things will happen around..and you will experience alot. It is just like in the movies. Sometimes we should take lesson from it.

Yesterday was my senior last date. She has been with SKALI for 6 years 2 months. Quite a long time for me.. Almost shed my tears. Its realy hard to leave this place.. i dunno why.. but it just feel like home when you’re here. She was the super duper senior. With respect and honor, wish you all the best in life Kak Azura. Will be missing you.. (T_T)

I have to alot of writing today, actually, i had drafted this writings at home, 10.08pm in my laptop, just make it short to cut and paste inside my blog. Just wanna to spill everything inside. Just a light reading for those who dropped by :-) dun forget to sign in the guest book yaa.. haha yakss..
There is one quote that attracts me to copy..
"..Fine guys open my eyes, smart guys open my mind but only a sweet guy can open my heart.."
Indeed! Only sweet guy know the key to open the locked, stiff, broken heart. Smart guys just make you do the thinking, fine guys just wash your sore eyes.. :-) and trully the sweet guys can make you heart melt.. Not the sweet talk one haa.. hate it! be real.. Jerky!.. :-)

Well.. just wondering.. what is the audience ha for my blog? whats the rate? Just to make it clear, what i wrote is what i am and what i went through.. this blog is purposely created for my own, personal story to share and story to tell.. Does not indicate to anyone outside my circle.. The topics are mostly came from me.. not too serious .. not too educative, and not too romantic.. :-) hmm well, thinking of creating another blog la at blogspot.. sound nice.. hehe.. probably will shift to more matured and more educative kind of blog.. hmm but i refer my blog to be like
one like sultanmuzaffar, afdlin .. hmm sharul hehe.. neotech? fahmi? hmm kkuniya? huhu.. who else.. cinta? hmm red apple? :-)

hehe 1st April 2006.. :-).. so just get myself enough sleep la kot..and do work from home. :-)boleh kemas rumah, kemas bilik, kemas keta, kemas dan kemas… kalau rajin la.. :-( chows… Just make yourself to feel great about you, to feel good to be you and to feel lucky to be you. You are special.. yes.. the spesel one.. :-) live life simple!

and now.. its APRIL FOOL guys.. :-)
